National Donut Day commemorates the “donut lassies,” female Salvation Army volunteers who provided writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending, home-cooked meals, and of course, donuts, for soldiers on the front lines. With limited resources, these treats were fried, only seven at a time. The Salvation Army’s Ensign, Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance, cleverly thought of frying donuts in soldiers’ helmets. Approximately 250 Salvation Army volunteers provided assistance to American soldiers in France, starting in 1917 during WWI. Entenmann’s ® Bakery produces more than 780 million donuts a year to keep up with the demands of Entenmann’s donut lovers nationwide. The Rich Frosted Donut has been Entenmann’s ® #1 seller since its introduction in 1973. The Salvation Army is located in more than 120 countries worldwide. In 2015, nearly 30 million Americans received assistance from The Salvation Army’s 3,500 officers,60,700 employees and 3.5 million volunteers.

Giving Kids Something to Smile About, NUK Aims to Donate $10,000 to Charitable Cause

NUK Aligns with Operation Smile to Help Repair Facial Deformities in Children
Hackensack, NJ (November 17, 2010)—NUK, the #1 selling pacifier company in North America, is hoping to donate $10,000 to Operation Smile with help from their loyal customers. Operation Smile, an international children’s medical charity, is dedicated to repairing cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities for children in developing countries. NUK will donate $1 to this worthy cause for each person who registers at NUK from now until December 31st.

NUK, like Operation Smile, is committed to helping children, especially those who may need a little extra care. Known for their dedication to children’s oral development, NUK has specifically designed products for kids with cleft lips and cleft palates, who have trouble using a standard bottle nipple. NUK’s two specialized nipples help achieve an almost natural sucking process by sealing the cleft during feeding time.

“We are honored to be partnering with Operation Smile to raise money and awareness for the organization,” says Olivier Foglizzo, Vice President of Marketing for NUK. “We look forward to creating additional medical product lines for other special needs children”.

Operation Smile will be spreading holiday joy on medical missions in both India and Mexico before the end of the year. The money donated by NUK will help pay for approximately 42 cleft lip operations. NUK will also give a number of samples from their line of products to children being screened for surgery. Every three minutes, it is estimated a child is born with a severe cleft condition – often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can’t afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life. NUK and Operation Smile are dedicated to helping these children receive new smiles so they can achieve their dreams.
