Pretend City Happenings


September marks the month for National Literacy and Pretend City Children’s Museum is honoring this important issue with the theme “One World, Many Stories.” Throughout the month, Pretend City will host fun activities and interactive book readings. A new book will be introduced each day highlighting a different world culture to help children appreciate the uniqueness in people and their traditions. Pretend City is proud to announce that September kicks off the new extended hours for Family Fun Fridays starting Friday, September 9, 2011 through the end of November. Fridays are all about family at Pretend City! Whether it’s through our “book of the day” which highlights important elements of family or during our new Families Night Out evening hours with fun activities for the whole family, you are sure to have a great time! As part of Family Fun Fridays beginning September 9th, Pretend City will remain open until 8:00p.m. to give your family a “Families Night Out”!

Team Up Tuesdays- Tuesdays, all day
Join us on Tuesdays as we team up with the professionals in our community to support your child’s optimal development. Throughout the day, Pretend City’s experienced stage staff will explore books about cooperation, new cultures and strengthening family bonds.

Read Right Thursdays presented by Read OC! – Thursdays at 3:30pm
Every Thursday in September, families will be able to work on reading skills through fun activities such as listening to stories, singing songs, playing games and making crafts!

PBS Kids WordWorld Wonderland- Sundays, all day
Help us transform Pretend City into WordWorld! Every Sunday is WordWorld Day so come along for an adventurous romp into a colorful, vibrant world of words! Join our play partners, wonderful Pretend City staff, and the WordFriends to explore the world of literacy in a fun and interactive way!

Baby Steps through Pretend City- Monday September 19, 2-3pm
Meet babies from all over the community, while enjoying Pretend City and all it has to offer your infant! Take advantage of this exclusive, infant only hour by engaging in age-appropriate facilitated activities, which will teach you about your baby’s developmental milestones.

PBS SoCal Day! with Duck from WordWorld- Sunday, September 25, 10am-3pm
Join Pretend City and PBS SoCal for a fun-filled day with a special guest visit by Duck from WordWorld! Highlights of the day include story times and video clips from WordWorld, an alphabet soup game and even photo opportunities with one of the characters! Come learn your letters as we explore Word World!

Family Autism Event- Monday, September 26th, 5:30-7:30pm
This special evening is an opportunity for children and their parents/siblings/caretakers to play in an autism-friendly environment along with other families. Many of our community partners who specialize in supporting children on the autism spectrum or Pervasive Developmental Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) will be on-hand to enrich your family’s play experience with their welcoming smiles and practical support.

Rosh Hashanah Celebration- Thursday, September 29th, all day
Today we will celebrate the Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashanah with Engineer Ari from our book of the day: Engineer Ari and the Rosh Hashanah Ride. We will hop aboard his train and journey through Jerusalem to collect goodies to celebrate the Jewish New Year. During his journey across Israel, we will learn an important lesson about friendship and forgiveness. This journey will be an introduction to the first historical train ride from Jaffa to Jerusalem in 1892.

Pretend City Children’s Museum is the first educational facility of its kind in the western United States representing a small, interconnected city designed to “build better brains” through purposeful play, hands-on learning experiences, role playing, and educational programming.
